1. Jacket (Uwagi): The jacket is a heavy, reinforced garment made from cotton or a cotton-blend fabric. It features a wrap-around design with a large lapel that overlaps in the front. The sleeves are typically long and fitted, and the jacket is designed to be sturdy to withstand the grips and pulls typical in judo.
2. Trousers (Zubon): The trousers are also made from a durable fabric and are designed to be comfortable yet resilient. They have a loose fit with reinforced knees to handle the demands of the sport. The waistband usually has a drawstring to adjust the fit.
3. Belt (Obi): The belt signifies the wearer’s rank and skill level. It’s worn around the waist over the jacket and tied in a specific way. Belts come in various colors representing different ranks, from white for beginners to black for advanced practitioners.
4. Overall Fit: The judogi should be loose enough to allow for movement but fitted enough to not interfere with techniques. The sleeves and trousers should be long enough to cover the arms and legs but not so long that they get in the way.
5. Material and Reinforcement: The gi is often reinforced in high-stress areas, such as the collar, cuffs, and knees, to prevent wear and tear. The material is generally heavy and tightly woven to endure the physical nature of judo.
